Acanthus Architects df were approached by an artist with a spectacular Victorian mansion house on the banks of the River Tay, Perthshire. Acanthus Architects df immediately came up with project proposals in model & sketch form, which struck a cord with our clients & also enabled us to go to pre-application planning meetings with Perth & Kinross District Council. Our bold contemporary design in a sensitive high profiled site on the banks of the River Tay was applauded by planners & our completed project won a Design Award for new buildings in the countryside.
Our proposal for this studio for a private client on the banks of the River Tay in Strathtay, Perthshire, involved an uncompromisingly modern building, making much use of glass & stone from nearby quarries. She wanted to create a studio for carrying out her artwork, with self-contained living accommodation.
We had stone, from the quarries by Blair Atholl, crushed to make mortar for the stone walls externally. We also we created 2 enormous glass "light wells" to admit more natural light to the painting studio below.
The spectacular large painting studio also gives access to the self-contained living accommodation in the studio.
Underfloor heating in the building provided a comfortable internal environment & the finishing of the building has been applauded by local planners & public bodies.
Our building features in numerous publications & has received an award for design of new buildings in the countryside.
