The West Pavilion
« back

The West Pavilion is the first of four contemporary dwellings to be built at the Grade B-Listed Wardhouse Estate near Insch. The pavilion is an uncompromisingly modern four bedroom house that sits within sensitive established landscape. Photo-realistic visuals were prepared at the initial design stages and won the trust of both the Planning Department and Historic Scotland.

The pavilion enjoys spectacular views south to Tap O' North and farmland from a multi-functional open-plan space. A large proportion of the south façade is glazed to maximise views and admit natural daylight to the main areas. The overhanging eaves moderate the proportion of sunlight admitted to protect against glare and overheating in the summer months. Rainwater from the roof is harvested back to the house in the form of grey water for flushing toilets etc.

The single-storey pavilion uses both modern and local materials ranging from traditional corrugated roof cladding to a bespoke Kalwall system to sections of the external envelope. Local agricultural components such as animal feeding rings were adapted by a local third-generation blacksmith to form an enclosure for storing logs for the wood-burning stove.

The overall design and materials aim towards a modern, contemporary and comfortable home which is not imposing and fits seamlessly into the landscape.
